Advising the President

The American South was opposing the US President Abraham Lincoln�s program to abolish slavery. He was worried about the protests but too busy to think of an appropriate solution. He realized that he needed advice. But whom should he turn to? He thought of his old farmer friend.The President�s carriage went to the farmer�s village to fetch him. The farmer was ploughing his field. The President�s invitation both surprised and pleased him. In his excitement he got on the carriage with his soiled clothes on.At the White House the President gave him a wonderful reception. Sitting in front of the fireplace and between drinks and food president Lincoln shared many confidences with the farmer. He told the farmer of his plans to abolish slavery and usher in a new era in American life. After pouring out his heart to his friend the President felt relieved. The farmer listened till late into the night waiting for his turn to speak and give suggestions to Lincoln.

The next morning the President gave the farmer presents and saw him off after thanking him for coming to the White House to advise him. Surprised, the farmer got on the carriage. He could not understand what advice he had given the President. As soon as he got home, he told his wife, "Looks like Lincoln still has his old habit of kidding. He talked to me, regaled him with food and drinks, thanked me, gave me presents and sent me back without asking me to do what he had called me for."

"In any event you saw the house America's President lives in, the bed he sleeps in, the kind of food he eats, the kind of clothes he wears and listened to him talk. And the President must have seen kind of clothes an American farmer wears, heard the kind language he speaks and learnt of the kind of work he does," said his wife.

"Yes, you are right. It was a wonderful opportunity for a farmer to learn about the American President who lives in the palatial White House. This must be what they call the exchange of ideas and experiences," replied the farmer. "It must be, " the wife nodded in agreement.

Author's note: The story was inspired by a partnership meeting between an INGO and a local NGO at a luxury hotel in Kathmandu in which the writer had participate.
