Book on story writing for children
PR
The Kathmandu Post
As little kids, every one of us must have listened to countless
stories from our parents and elders, and also read them in books.
Writing children's stories, however, may not be as simple as it
sounds, and needs to have the requisite qualities to attract the
attention and interest of young minds.
So, storywriter and journalist Vinaya Kumar Kasajoo has come out
with a new book entitled Balkatha Lekhan (Story writing for kids),
the first book in Nepali language that teaches and gives practical
guidelines to aspiring writers about the various aspects of story
writing for kids.
Published by Vivek Sirjansheel Prakashan, Balkatha Lekhan discusses
in detail the themes, plots, structures, selection and portrayal
of characters, construction of dialogues, language styles, effective
beginning and end of children's stories and various other aspects
of story writing. The book also provides information on the different
types of children's stories, social stories, fairytales, fantasies,
folktales, historical stories, parables, fables as well as humor
in juvenile literature.
The book also discusses the story writing style of the famous children's
story writer Hans Christian Anderson, and in addition includes Nepali
and foreign stories for examples.
Though rich in number, producing children's story collections in
Nepali literature is still lagging behind the children's literature
of many other languages from the qualitative point of view. Nepali
children's story publication is still restricted to the print media
and has not been able to adapt to adopt modern electronic media
and multimedia, nor has it been able to bring diversity and modernity
to the story structures, plots and characters.
So Kasajoo's guidepost has been prepared considering all these facts,
says a press release from the author himself.
The 56-page book is priced at Rs 40 and can also be downloaded from
www.balsansar.com.

Democratization of media – A debate
for democratization of media and communication

Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights says: "Everyone
has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes
freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive
and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless
of frontiers."
An individual is endowed with many basic rights including the right
to information. Media rights is complementary to human rights and
people should be made aware of these rights. There are plenty of
institutions to guarantee human rights in Nepal.
However, there are only a few institutions that guarantee media
rights.
Vinaya Kumar Kasajoo, wrote Media Ko Loktantrikaran to raise awareness
of Nepalis regarding human rights. Kasajoo is of the opinion that
Nepali media have been shaped by feudalism, and that democratization
of media is essential in the course of the democratization of the
country. Kasajoo regrets that things like mission journalism or
people-oriented journalism have become a thing of the past.
The developing countries have been negatively affected by global
media. Media is fast moving from the hands of editors and media
experts to the hands of businessmen. Profit-oriented and not people-oriented
journalism is in vogue these days.
With the advent of absolute democracy, Nepalis have got an opportunity
to shape their future with their own hands. At this historical juncture,
the new role to be played by media should be pre-determined.
Since the democratization of media is tremendously important to
make it more people-oriented, the media experts and the civil society
must join hands to ensure the media rights of the people.
